March, 2020: Prince Igor & Poulenc

16 March, 2020, 7:30PM, Old Dominion University

Prince Igor & Poulenc

Vincent G. Stiepevich, After the Masked Ball (ca. 1900)

Hosted by the F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series and the Norfolk Chamber Consort, Invencia Piano Duo, comprised of Andrey Kasparov and Oksana Lutsyshyn, will appear at Old Dominion University’s Chandler Recital Hall in a program that showcases the brilliance of Igor Stravinsky and his protégé, Francis Poulenc. Among the artists to perform will be baritone Rod Gilfry.

Along with Igor Stravinsky’s Serenade in A for Piano from 1925, and his Two Poems of Paul Verlaine from 1910, there will be featured songs and The Masked Ball of Francis Poulenc.

Poulenc was one of Stravinsky’s greatest defenders in his later years, unwilling to submit to the whims of post-war artists who were sometimes dismissive of Stravinsky’s music after 1945. This should come as no surprise. Poulenc’s loyalty was attributable directly to Stravinsky having championed the music of the young Poulenc in his formative years.

The program will begin at 7:30PM, with a pre-concert discussion by Dr. Kasparov from 7:15PM.

A catered reception follows the performance, with food provided by friends of the Norfolk Chamber Consort.

Tickets at the door $25.00, Students $10.00.
