Arts@ODU and the Institute for Humanities present The Birth of an Answer: a centennial celebration of the creative African American response to D.W. Griffith’s film, Birth of a Nation (1915), as well as Hampton Roads’ historic resistance to the film. The event is made possible in part through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Come join us at 7:30PM on 18 September, 2015, at the Attucks Theatre, for a screening of African American pioneer filmmaker Oscar Micheaux’s Within Our Gates (1920), accompanied by a live performance of Adolphus Hailstork’s newly-composed score for the film. The event will feature members of the Harlem Quartet, along with members of The I. Sherman Greene Chorale. Among the participating collaborators is Dr. Andrey Kasparov.
An encore performance will take place on 21 September at 8:00PM, at Chandler Recital Hall, on the campus of Old Dominion University.
